Statement

Adiba Ndiwe is a Welsh/Nigerian artist, writer, and advocate for arts diversification. Though she uses multimedia such as graphite, film and text to communicate socially and politically charged stories, she's most known for her oil paintings, which juxtapose detail-rich realism with doodles and contextually emulate the expansiveness of liberal arts. She first learnt oil painting to challenge the lack of representation for Black artists working with traditional mediums, a reality that ignited her decision to use satire as a tool to expose the elitism within Western Art. Influenced by her upbringing on a Welsh council estate and academic journey as a minority, her feelings of displacement fuel her thematic interests. Through her practice, Ndiwe questions how we determine what art is of intellectual value, and what structures influence this. Curious about the intersections of identity, Ndiwe explores ways to visualise the nuances of race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomics and spirituality, evoking a philosophical and cerebral approach to dissecting the systems working against marginalised groups.
